This trail crosses State Lands, and a State Lands recreation permit is required (get one, good for a year, at any fishing license outlet for $10).

Need to Know

Another option is to continue west past the dead trees to the next open slope, which will give you a little more vertical before you hit the road out.

Description

At the second point on the skin track that turns from north to south, head west across a small gulley to open north-facing slopes - you'll note the line of dead trees ahead of you. Pick any line north down the open slopes for 400 feet until you intercept the uphill track.

Best after lots of fresh snow - will tend to get really heavy after a few days of no snow. Slopes are covered with brush, downfall, and stumps, so skip it if there's not really good coverage!

History & Background

This is one of several areas of clear-cutting on the north side of Mount Ellis. Much more attractive in the winter than after the snow melts!
