Overview

Expect a wide open powder field on a low angle pitch. The western slopes of Mt. Sniktau provide easy access to some excellent backcountry skiing around Loveland Pass.

Need to Know

Avalanches are common in this area and have been responsible for the deaths of far too many skiers and riders. While the terrain is fun, the snowpack must be analyzed by an expert prior to committing to an ascent and/or descent.

The route as shown crosses Sheep Creek near Route 6. Great care must be taken to avoid falling through a hidden snow bridge and getting caught in the creek, especially in the spring. It may be prudent to avoid the route, or to find an alternate descent method for this portion, depending on the season and conditions.

Description

As this is avalanche terrain, it should always be skied with a partner. Both parties must have avalanche rescue knowledge, skills, and gear (shovel, probe, beacon).

There are some terrain traps in this area that should be avoided. The biggest is Sheep Creek, which runs to the skier's left of this line. The upper left slope of Sheep Creek has been measured at 41 degrees and has slid in the past, taking several lives.
