Overview

This line is almost directly opposite the Mt. Bierstadt: Northwest Face and both can be seen from one another (and theoretically linked up in a long day).

Description

Take the Guanella Pass Road from the Winter TH to the summit bathrooms (you'll run right into these). From the restrooms, there are signs pointing you to Square Top Mountain, and the route should become very obvious from here.

You can follow the summer trail (typically much less tracked out than Bierstadt but still followable in wintertime), or simply skin your way over to the very obvious southwest face. Continue up and up and up (past one false summit) until you can go no higher; you are now standing on top of the very large summit of Square Top (fitting name).

Ski down the same snowfields on the southwest face that you just skinned. The skiing should be relatively easy and less than 30 degrees the entire way down. Take care to ski carefully, as there are cliff bands on the north side of this face that will drop you very far into Silver Dollar Lakes.
