Overview

This run takes you along the Mud/Rice Bowl divide, then drops off the north side into Mud Bowl by going through a beautiful aspen forest. The trees are perfectly spaced for some fun tree skiing.

Need to Know

A death occurred close to this area last season due to a terrain trap in the form of an abrupt transition from steep to flat. The victim was buried incredibly deeply, despite deploying an air-bag. Watch for such traps.

Description

Approach as per Farmington Spine. Once at the top of Mud Peak, you can drop into Mud Bowl or Rice Bowl. Alternatively, you can also just ski the divide between the two, which may be a more conservative line. Ski the divide until you see an inviting aspen forest on your left, then accept the invitation to drop in.

I shot some GoPro footage (attached to this beta) that shows the exact descent, and other parts of the general area. Try not to judge my poor skiing ability too harshly.

Note that dropping in from Mud Peak is complicated by a long cornice line. The cornices are smaller and more manageable in the spring time.

In this video I skied Rice bowl three times and met up with Brett, a fellow skier of the backcountry.

This was taken after skiing a good way down Rice bowl. Lots of great ski terrain here; it's just so hard to access.

Here are some turns I made while getting off the ridge-line above Rice/Mud bowls.

This video shows 3 descents from Mud Peak. And yes, I suck at skiing.

Typical of my camera, the part I wanted to show is the only part washed out. I could see massive roller-ball fragments from a few days ago. Notice the corniced ridge line.
