Description

The Wright peak ski trail was first cut back in the 1930s and is a fun ski trail with lots of turns and a few short pitches where you can get in some nice turns. Don't expect a steep fall line run or open glades but a fun roller coaster ride through the woods.

Starting from the Adirondack Loj, follow the Van Hoevenberg trail towards Marcy Dam.

After about a mile, turn right onto the Algonquin trail for Wright peak and after another mile or so, the trail starts to climb more steeply (I transitioned from kick wax to skins at this point).

At approximately 3000 ft of elevation, the ski trail branches off to the left from the hiking trail. Follow the ski trail to the top and then enjoy the ride back down.

Most of the ski out is downhill but there are a few rises on the last mile or two back to the parking lot where skins or kick wax was helpful.

History & Background

The Wright peak trail was cut in 1938 and opened for skiing that December. With the rise of ski resorts, the trail became overgrown by the 1960s before being rediscovered and and re-cleared in the late 1980s.
