Description

There are a lot of power lines in the way, but the views of the Elk Range are quite nice on this climb. It mostly follows roads and due to it's low elevation, the snow isn't always very good. Lots of snowmobiles use this route, so the 7 miles goes by fast.

From the Montgomery Flats trailhead, go up the driveway to a locked gate and look for the trail to the right. Follow this by power lines, then gently uphill and across the slope until you find an old road. Cross Montgomery Flats until you reach Burnt Mountain Road at 3.0 miles and take a left.

Zig zag under power lines, or just go straight up them if the snow is good. At the summit of the road, 10,030'), you are now 4.5 miles in. Continue descending the road a little over a mile and look for a clearing at 9,566'. Take a right here (look for signs) and you'll be at the hut in a quarter mile. If you miss this turnoff, you'll quickly find a road leading to the right, which will also take you to the hut.
