Can you damage the base while waxing?

Hi, this is my first pair of skis and I’m new to waxing. I was scraping the wax off and noticed that some the white wax shavings were coming off with streaks of black. I can only imagine that means I’m scraping too hard and have partially scraped my base (which is also black). Does this sound right? Is this normally an issue? Additionally, when people say “Tip to tail” do they mean long strongs that begin at the tip and end at the tail? Or do they simply mean stroking in that direction? I ask because I’ve been using short, incremental strokes in the direction of tip to tail.

Thanks
